About Me

Hello! My name is Drew. I started this blog for the benefit of encouraging me to learn, read, and write more. It took a while to decide what I wanted the theme of the blog to be about but decided based on previous attempts with blogging that picking a topic/theme that I am personally interested in, close to, and interact with frequently would have the greatest chance of me sticking with it.

What is Hard Healthcare about?

Since most of my time during the week is spent in a professional setting, I thought covering topics related to my work would be a great starting point. It's a theme with endless topics to write about and probably the industry that I know the most about. So that's when Hard Healthcare was born.

Through this blog, I will post and share case studies, discussions, facts, data, and the occasional gif related to American Healthcare System with a lean toward tech's impact on that industry. Since Healthcare is such a controversial and politicized theme I will refrain from playing the blame game or questions about whether it should be considered a basic human right or a privilege for those that can afford it. Instead, I will focus on productive discussions on the challenges and problems we face, and discuss possible solutions. After all, the cost of healthcare doesn't draw party lines so why should we?

Who am I?

I am born and raised in Oregon, where I currently live with my wife Emily, our son Levi, and our cats (Tabi and Emma) and our Golden Retriever (Benny). Emily and I met during our undergrad at Oregon State University in 2010 and got married in 2017. I received a BS in Business Information Systems from OSU in 2012 and began my career in the healthcare industry working for a global management consulting firm. My career has been heavily focused on helping healthcare systems leverage software and analytics to drive operational excellence.

I have over a decade of experience as a Healthcare technology consultant dedicated to helping hospitals and health system clients increase their operating efficiency and lower cost by identifying and solving the wide range of complex organizational and operational challenges they face. Most of my day to day is focused on managing large scale software implementations to drive recurring benefit, reduce cost, and increase data-driven decision making for hospital executives.

While I have worked with many different business areas in the healthcare market, I specialize in healthcare revenue cycle. These projects range from large and complex multi-teared solutions deployed broadly across the organization or smaller targeted solutions addressing a specific business problem.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time learning new carpentry skills. I've been able to pick up a fair amount through remodeling our house with my wife. We thought it'd be a fun project to buy a fixer-upper and try our hand at a full remodel. How hard could it be? Chip and Joanna seem to do a new house each week. Turns out, renovation projects are a great lesson in perseverance, humility, and patience. When I'm not pretending to be a master carpenter I enjoy spending time with family, attending sporting and music events, and anything related to food and beer!
